Sea Engineering Intern — The flagship technical programme. Twelve weeks. Spans all three Sea businesses: Shopee backend, Garena game platform infrastructure, SeaMoney payments and banking systems, and shared platform teams (data infrastructure, security, AI/ML).

Application Process & Timeline
- Online Application — careers.sea.com. Applications open year-round. Peak summer intake applications accepted November–March. Sea also runs December and February cohorts.
- Online Assessment — For SWE: HackerRank coding challenge (medium to hard). For ML: a take-home ML assignment or Kaggle-style competition. For PM and business: a case study.
- Technical Interviews — Two to three coding rounds for SWE. ML system design for AI roles. Product case for PM roles.
- Cross-Functional / Hiring Manager Interview — Discussion of motivation, ASEAN market understanding, and fit with the specific business unit.
- Offer — One to two weeks after final round.
Tips to Get Selected
- Apply to all three businesses. Many students apply only to Shopee and miss Garena and SeaMoney. Garena has a distinctive engineering culture (game infrastructure is technically fascinating) and SeaMoney is in a high-growth phase. Applying across all three businesses maximises your chances.
- Know the competitive landscape for each business. Garena competes with Riot Games and Moonton in ASEAN gaming. Shopee competes with Lazada and TikTok Shop. SeaMoney competes with GrabFinancials and OVO. Demonstrating awareness of each business's competitive position signals regional depth.
- For SWE, Go is the dominant backend language across Sea's businesses. Demonstrating Go proficiency or a personal Go project differentiates you significantly.
- For ML Research, Sea's AI team is highly research-driven. Showing publications (even workshop papers), Kaggle competition results, or a GitHub repository with well-documented ML work is essential.
- Apply for multiple cohorts. Sea runs February, May/June, and December cohorts. If you miss the summer intake, applying for February or December gives a second chance with the same quality of experience.
What the Internship Is Like
Sea Group internships are high-velocity and high-ownership. The company's culture — informed by Forrest Li's "The Way of the Sea" cultural manifesto — emphasises extreme ambition, self-discipline, speed, and deep care for users and employees. SWE interns are expected to ship production code within the first two weeks. ML Research interns are expected to produce results comparable to junior research engineers.

Company-wide all-hands meetings, product demos, and cross-team hackathons are frequent. Senior leaders including business unit CEOs are accessible for intern Q&A sessions.
Working hours are demanding across all Sea businesses — expect ten to eleven hours per day as a baseline, with heavier periods during product launches. The culture is explicitly high-performance and does not suit students seeking a relaxed experience.
