About this role
Part-Time Primary School Math EducatorBy The Roots | Bukit Timah Plaza | Primary Math Education Centre About By The RootsBy The Roots is a primary school Math education centre in Bukit Timah Plaza that helps children build strong mathematical foundations “from the roots up.” Classes are intentionally small, with a maximum of 6–8 students, so every child can be seen, heard, and supported. Our teaching approach focuses on understanding, not memorising. We help students rebuild missed foundational concepts, develop factual fluency, explain their reasoning, and grow in confidence through structured, hands-on, inquiry-based learning. We are looking for part-time educators who believe that children do not struggle with Math because they “cannot do Math,” but often because key concepts were never fully understood. Role OverviewWe are seeking warm, thoughtful, and reliable Part-Time Primary Math Educators to teach small-group classes for Primary 1 to Primary 6 students. This role is suitable for educators who enjoy helping children understand Math deeply, not simply complete worksheets or memorise procedures. You will guide students through concept-based lessons, support them at their individual pace, encourage mathematical reasoning, and help them build confidence in problem-solving. Classes are held in person at our centre in Bukit Timah Plaza. Key ResponsibilitiesAs a part-time educator, you will: • Teach small-group Primary Math classes, typically up to 6–8 students. • Deliver lessons aligned with the Singapore MOE syllabus. • Help students strengthen foundational concepts, number sense, factual fluency, and problem-solving skills. • Use questioning, guided discovery, manipulatives, visual models, worked examples, and explanation-based teaching to deepen understanding. • Encourage students to explain their thinking, justify their methods, and reflect on mistakes. • Support students who may have gaps in prior learning or low confidence in Math. • Mark and review student work, identifying misconceptions and areas for improvement. • Provide short progress updates to the centre lead and, where needed, to parents. • Maintain a nurturing, organised, and encouraging classroom environment. What We Are Looking ForYou would be a strong fit if you are: • Patient, encouraging, and genuinely interested in helping children learn. • Willing to teach for understanding rather than relying only on drills, shortcuts, or rote memorisation. • Strong advocate of Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach used in Singapore Math • Comfortable teaching Primary Math concepts from lower primary through upper primary. • Able to explain concepts clearly using more than one method. • Familiar with Singapore Primary Math and PSLE-style problem solving. • Confident managing a small group while still giving individual attention. • Reliable, punctual, and professional in communication. • Open to feedback and willing to align with By The Roots’ teaching philosophy and lesson structure. Preferred QualificationsApplicants should ideally have one or more of the following: • Experience teaching or tutoring Primary Math. • Familiarity with the Singapore MOE Primary Math syllabus. • Experience with PSLE Math preparation. • Background in education, mathematics, psychology, child development, or a related field. • NIE-trained teachers, ex-MOE teachers, undergraduates, graduates, and experienced tutors are welcome to apply. • Strong A-Level / IB / polytechnic / university performance in Mathematics or related subjects. Prior experience is helpful, but we value teaching mindset, clarity of explanation, and care for children just as much. Teaching Style We ValueAt By The Roots, we are especially interested in tutors who can: • Ask good questions rather than immediately giving answers. • Help students see why a method works. • Use mistakes as learning opportunities. • Break down abstract concepts into concrete, visual, and relatable examples. • Encourage students who are anxious, discouraged, or “stuck.” • Balance exam readiness with genuine conceptual understanding. • Make Math feel approachable, meaningful, and even enjoyable.
