ByteDance / TikTok Singapore Internship Guide
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has made Singapore one of its most important global hubs, housing TikTok's international headquarters and major engineering and trust & safety teams. Internship opportunities span software engineering, data science, product management, operations, and trust & safety. Pay is among the highest for tech internships in Singapore.
ByteDance / TikTok Singapore: Internship Guide
ByteDance, the Beijing-founded tech company behind TikTok, Douyin, and Lark, established its international headquarters in Singapore in 2020. Today the Singapore office houses over 2,000 employees working on TikTok's global product, engineering, trust & safety, commerce, and policy teams. For students, this translates into an internship at a company that is simultaneously a global social media leader and a high-growth engineering organisation. ByteDance Singapore's intern programme has grown rapidly and now takes in hundreds of interns each year across multiple cohorts.
Key Internship Programmes
Software Engineering Intern — The primary programme for CS, Computer Engineering, and Data Science students. Teams: TikTok product engineering, trust & safety systems, infrastructure, machine learning, and data platforms.
Data Science / ML Intern — For students with strong statistics, ML, and Python backgrounds. Projects span recommendation systems, content moderation ML, and A/B testing infrastructure.
Product Management Intern — Roles in TikTok's product squads covering creator tools, advertising, e-commerce (TikTok Shop), and live streaming.
Trust & Safety (T&S) Operations Intern — Policy enforcement, content moderation, and safety programme operations. Open to students from social sciences, law, and communications backgrounds.
Global Business Solutions (GBS) Intern — Sales and marketing roles focused on TikTok advertising and brand partnerships for APAC markets.

Application Process & Timeline
- Online Application — jobs.bytedance.com. Applications open year-round. ByteDance runs multiple cohorts: February–April, May–August (main summer), September–November.
- Online Technical Assessment — For SWE and ML roles: algorithmic coding test (similar to LeetCode medium/hard) or an ML assignment.
- Technical Interviews — Two to three rounds. SWE: coding and system design. ML: ML system design and coding. PM: product case + data case.
- HR Interview — Culture fit and motivation. ByteDance asks specifically about adaptability and working in fast-paced environments.
- Offer — One to two weeks after final round.
Tips to Get Selected
- Apply across multiple cohorts. ByteDance's multi-cohort model means you can apply in December for a February start if you miss the summer intake. This is underutilised by Singapore students who only look for summer roles.
- For SWE, prioritise Go and Python proficiency. ByteDance's backend systems are heavily Go-based. Showing Go fluency in your application or mentioning a Go project on GitHub is a strong differentiator.
- Know TikTok's product deeply. Use TikTok regularly and be able to describe how the recommendation algorithm works conceptually, what TikTok Shop's value proposition is, and how live commerce differs across APAC markets.
- For ML roles, study recommendation system design. ByteDance's core technology is its recommendation engine. Be ready to discuss how a two-tower model works, how content embeddings are learned, and how A/B testing is used to improve recommendations.
- Show adaptability. ByteDance's culture is famous for fast iteration ("always day one" is a real cultural value here). Give examples of when you learned quickly in a chaotic or ambiguous environment.
What the Internship Is Like
ByteDance Singapore internships are fast-paced and high-ownership. SWE interns often push code to production within weeks. Teams move at a pace that is faster than most technology companies in Singapore, and expectations for independent problem-solving are high. Mentorship is available but less formalised than at Google or Microsoft — interns who ask for help get it, but the culture rewards those who try first.
The work environment is open-plan and energetic. TikTok's content moderation and trust & safety teams operate 24/7, which gives the office a sense of global urgency. PM interns participate in sprint planning, user interviews, and cross-functional meetings with engineering and marketing from week one.
Benefits include company meals, gym facilities, and a collaborative office space in the CBD. ByteDance Singapore also runs intern social events and a hackathon.
Return Offers & Full-Time Conversion
ByteDance Singapore converts approximately 50–65% of interns. Full-time offers are for New Graduate roles starting within six months of graduation. The headcount availability can vary more than at Google or Microsoft due to ByteDance's faster business cycle, but strong performers are almost always retained.
