HSBC Singapore is a major regional hub for Global Banking & Markets, Wealth & Personal Banking, and Commercial Banking, employing over 4,000 people. HSBC Singapore: Internship Guide
HSBC has been present in Singapore since 1877 and today operates its Asia Pacific headquarters for several business lines out of the city-state. Singapore houses HSBC's major FX trading desk, its ASEAN corporate banking franchise, and one of Asia's largest private banking offices. The bank is also significantly investing in technology, with a regional technology centre housing engineering, data, and cybersecurity teams. For interns, HSBC offers broad exposure across one of the world's truly global financial institutions.
Key Internship Programmes
Global Internship Programme (GIP) — Ten weeks, June–August, for penultimate-year students. Covers Global Banking & Markets (GBM), Wealth & Personal Banking (WPB), Commercial Banking (CMB), and Global Functions (Finance, Risk, Compliance, Technology).

Application Process & Timeline
- Online Application — hsbc.com/careers. Opens August–September.
- Gamified Assessment (Pymetrics) — HSBC uses Pymetrics, a neuroscience-based platform with twelve mini-games measuring cognitive and emotional traits. There are no right or wrong answers, but responding authentically and consistently matters.
- Video Interview — HSBC HireVue with competency and strengths-based questions.
- Assessment Centre — Group case study exercise, an individual strengths-based interview, and a technical interview for markets or technology roles.
- Offer — Within two weeks of assessment centre.
Tips to Get Selected
- Prepare for Pymetrics without gaming it. HSBC explicitly says it looks for consistency across the assessment. Trying to game individual games back-fires. Focus on being quick and accurate on attention tasks, but do not overthink.
- Know HSBC's China-ASEAN corridor. HSBC's competitive advantage is its ability to connect China, Hong Kong, and ASEAN. Referencing the RMB internship or ASEAN Belt and Road financing in your cover letter shows strategic alignment.
- Highlight language skills. Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, Bahasa Indonesia, or Thai are genuinely valued at HSBC given its regional footprint.
- For GBM roles, prepare a two-minute pitch on a macro theme (e.g., ASEAN manufacturing relocation, green energy transition financing). This is often requested in final-round interviews.
- Leverage HSBC's campus ambassadors at NUS and NTU — they provide direct access to the recruitment team.
What the Internship Is Like
HSBC Singapore runs a formal intern programme with weekly seminars on topics ranging from sustainable finance to ASEAN geopolitics. GBM interns sit on live desks and contribute to client-facing work from week one. Commercial Banking interns may visit client premises and participate in credit analysis for live lending decisions.
The culture is described as international and structured — less frenetic than some US bulge brackets, with clearer expectations about working hours. HSBC has a firm-wide commitment to hybrid work that applies to interns as well.
Diversity and inclusion are taken seriously: HSBC Singapore runs active programmes for women in banking, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and disability inclusion that interns can engage with.
Return Offers & Full-Time Conversion
HSBC Singapore converts approximately 55–70% of interns. The primary pathway to full-time employment is the HSBC International Graduate Programme (IGP), a two-and-a-half-year rotational scheme. IGP offers are highly competitive globally but interns who convert have a clear fast-track through to VP within five years.
