SMU Law Internship Guide: Law School Placements in Singapore
SMU's Yong Pung How School of Law runs one of Singapore's most structured internship programmes for law students, with vacation training at top firms and the AGC. This guide covers the SCCA training programme, top law firms that recruit SMU students, and typical pay.
SMU Law Internship Guide: Law School Placements in Singapore
SMU's Yong Pung How School of Law (YPH SOL) produces some of Singapore's most sought-after law graduates. The school's internship framework differs significantly from other faculties — it is governed partly by the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) and the Singapore Courts, not just by the university. Understanding this regulatory context is essential.
Internship vs Vacation Training vs Pupillage
Three distinct frameworks apply to law students:
| Programme | Who | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vacation Training | Law students (Y1-Y3) | 4–8 weeks | Exploratory, no Bar requirement |
| Structured Training Contract (STC) | Post-graduation | 6 months–1 year | Required for Bar admission |
| Pupillage (historical) | Post-Bar | Being phased out | Practice certificate |
For SMU law undergraduates, vacation training is the primary internship format. It is not governed by SILE requirements but is critical for building your CV and identifying which practice area suits you.
SMU SOL Internship Requirements
SMU SOL does not have the same 270-hour mandatory framework as other SMU schools. Instead:
- Vacation training is strongly encouraged from Y1
- The SOL Career Services team facilitates placements at approved firms
- A minimum of 2 vacation training stints (at different organisations) is recommended before final year
- Research internships at think tanks (CALS, IPS, ISEAS) count toward experience
Vacation Training at Law Firms
Most SMU law students do their first vacation training during the May–July break in Y1. By Y3, having 3–4 stints at different firms (varying in size and practice area) is the competitive norm for students aiming at the top firms.

Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) Internship
The AGC is Singapore's government legal service and one of the most prestigious internship destinations for law students:
- Duration: 4–6 weeks during vacations
- Applications: Sent directly to AGC's HR; coordinated by SMU SOL Career Services
- Divisions: Civil, Criminal, International Affairs, Legislation
- Pay: Approximately SGD 800–1,000/month
- Citizenship: Only Singapore citizens (or PRs with strong standing)
- Competitive: AGC selects from NUS, SMU, and UK-trained students; top-quarter academic standing expected
The AGC internship gives exposure to government litigation and public law that private firms cannot replicate.
SCCA — Vacation Training Programme
The Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA) facilitates in-house legal internships at corporate legal departments:
- Duration: 4–8 weeks
- Companies: Singapore Airlines, Singtel, CapitaLand, DBS, Temasek Holdings
- Pay: SGD 800–1,200/month
- Value: Exposure to commercial legal work without the billing pressure of private practice
In-house legal internships are underrated by law students. If you are considering a corporate career in legal operations or compliance, this is the right track.

Practical Tips for SMU Law Students
- Start in Y1 summer, even informally — a paid role at a smaller firm still counts on your CV and gives you courtroom observation opportunities
- Target at least one large firm AND one in-house/AGC stint — breadth of experience is valued by recruiters
- Moot court competition — SMU's moot teams are nationally and internationally competitive; strong mooters get flagged by disputes practices at A&G, D&N, and HSF
- Know your practice area by Y3 — generic "I'm interested in everything" applications are weak; narrow down to corporate vs disputes vs IP vs public law by the time you apply for top firms
- Attend the SMU SOL Careers Fair and SCCA networking events — hiring partners attend and remember faces
SMU law students increasingly compete with NUS law graduates for the same top-tier roles. The differentiator is typically mooting experience, academic performance, and the quality of previous vacation training stints.
