Standard Chartered Singapore: Internship Guide
Standard Chartered has been present in Singapore for more than 160 years and today operates its global technology headquarters (SC Ventures and Group Technology) from Singapore alongside its consumer banking, wealth management, and institutional banking businesses. With over 7,000 employees in Singapore, the firm is one of the largest international employers on the island. StanChart is also a notable early mover on sustainable finance, digital banking, and ASEAN corridors — areas that feature prominently in intern projects.

Application Process & Timeline
- Online Application — sc.com/en/careers. Opens August–September.
- Strengths-Based Online Assessment — StanChart uses a strengths-based approach, not a traditional competency model. Assessments ask about natural preferences and energisers rather than past experience.
- Digital Video Interview — Strengths-based questions. Authenticity is valued over polished corporate answers.
- Assessment Centre (virtual or in-person) — Group exercise, case study, and two individual interviews. The group exercise is weighted heavily.
- Offer — Typically within two weeks.
Tips to Get Selected
- Understand the strengths-based model. StanChart explicitly does not select on grades alone. Its strengths framework asks what you genuinely enjoy doing and are good at. Authentic answers outperform rehearsed corporate speak.
- Research sustainable finance. StanChart is one of the most active banks in ASEAN green finance, issuing green bonds and sustainability-linked loans. Knowing the bank's $300 billion sustainable finance target and naming a specific product or deal is a standout move.
- Prepare for the group exercise. The assessment centre group exercise assesses collaboration and constructive contribution — not dominance. Practice facilitating and building on others' ideas.
- Highlight any cross-cultural experience. StanChart's brand promise is "Here for Good" and it operates in sixty-plus countries. Showing international exposure (study abroad, multinational projects, language skills) is valued.
- Apply to SC Ventures if interested in fintech. The SC Ventures internship is smaller and more entrepreneurial, but it offers exceptional exposure and is less oversubscribed.
What the Internship Is Like
Standard Chartered Singapore runs a notably inclusive intern programme. The onboarding week covers firm culture, digital banking trends, and sustainable finance. Interns across divisions participate in a shared "intern challenge" project, delivering recommendations to senior management.
Financial Markets interns attend morning market briefings and work on desk research projects. Technology interns in the SC Ventures ecosystem work with startup-like velocity on product or engineering challenges. The culture is described as international, open, and less hierarchical than US bulge bracket firms.
Working hours are demanding in Financial Markets and Global Banking but more balanced in Technology and support functions. The firm has a formal no-intern-email-after-midnight policy, which is enforced.
Return Offers & Full-Time Conversion
Standard Chartered Singapore converts approximately 55–65% of interns. Full-time offers roll into StanChart's International Graduate Programme (IGP), which is a two-to-three-year rotational scheme. Interns who receive IGP offers bypass the general application process, which is a significant advantage given the programme's popularity.
