About this role
The Assistant Teacher is responsible for supporting high-quality teaching and learning across the primary phase to help students access the curriculum and make progress in their academic, social, emotional and personal development. This is achieved through effective classroom support, reinforcement of learning activities, and assisting with the implementation of teaching and support strategies directed by the Teacher and Therapy and Pastoral Care (TPC) team. The role requires contributing to a positive, inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement, confidence and independence. The Assistant Teacher is expected to support the diverse needs of students, including neurodivergent learners, while promoting positive behaviour, wellbeing and participation both within and beyond the classroom. The Assistant Teacher is also expected to uphold the school’s mission, vision, values and safeguarding responsibilities, while contributing positively to the wider life of the school. This includes supporting extra-curricular activities, enrichment programmes and school events to help provide a well-rounded educational experience for all students. Responsibilities: 1. Teaching and Learning § Support the Teacher in preparing and delivering lessons for Primary students from Early Years to Year 6. § Assist in creating a positive, inclusive and structured learning environment that supports student engagement and participation. § Provide individual or small-group support to students, including those with diverse learning and behavioural needs. § Adapt and reinforce learning activities under the guidance of the Teacher and Therapy and Pastoral Care (TPC) team. § Support students in developing academic, social, emotional and independent learning skills. § Encourage positive behaviour and help students follow classroom routines and expectations. § Assist with monitoring student progress and providing feedback to the Teacher. § Help maintain accurate classroom records, resources and student information where required. 2. Student Support and Well-being § Promote the well-being, safeguarding and pastoral care of all students. § Build supportive and respectful relationships with students to encourage confidence and participation. § Support neurodivergent students with emotional regulation, transitions, organisation and learning readiness. § Implement support strategies, accommodations and care plans as directed by the Teacher and TPC team. § Observe and report concerns relating to student learning, behaviour, attendance or well-being to the appropriate staff member. § Encourage the development of students’ independence, social interaction and self-esteem. § Assist students during classroom activities, breaktimes, transitions, outings and school events where required. 3. Communication & Collaboration § Work collaboratively with Teachers, TPC staff and colleagues to support student learning and well-being. § Communicate professionally and respectfully with staff, students and parents when required. § Attend relevant meetings, training sessions and case discussions as requested. § Share observations and feedback regarding student progress and classroom support needs. § Contribute positively to the school team and wider school community. § Support consistency between classroom expectations, therapy strategies and pastoral support plans. 4. Professional Practice § Uphold the values, policies and professional standards of the school at all times. § Maintain professionalism, punctuality, confidentiality and appropriate conduct in all interactions. § Participate in professional development related to SEN/UDL, safeguarding and inclusive practices. § Follow guidance and direction from Teachers, the TPC team and School Leadership Team. § Support school activities, events, enrichment programmes and excursions where required. § Assist with Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) and holiday programmes where assigned. § Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role, as directed by the School Leadership Team. Homeroom Responsibilities: 1. Pastoral Support Support the Teacher in maintaining positive relationships, routines and behaviour expectations within the classroom. § Support consistent classroom routines and smooth transitions throughout the day § Assist in maintaining an organised, safe and purposeful classroom environment § Reinforce positive behaviour strategies and support students with regulation and engagement § Report behavioural, emotional or pastoral concerns to the Teacher or relevant staff promptly 2. Learning Support & Student Development Assist the Teacher in supporting student learning, participation and progress across subjects. § Provide individual and small-group support during lessons and learning activities § Reinforce differentiated learning strategies and classroom expectations as directed by the Teacher § Observe student engagement, participation and progress, and provide feedback to the Teacher § Support intervention activities and targeted learning programmes where required 3. Family Communication Support Support positive communication and relationships with families under the guidance of the Teacher § Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents when required § Share relevant student updates or concerns with the Teacher in a timely manner § Support preparation of student work, records or information for reporting and parent meetings where requested § Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all communication regarding students and families 4. Collaboration & Professional Practice Work collaboratively with school staff to support consistency in student care and learning support. § Support the implementation of WISPs, classroom accommodations and support strategies as directed § Communicate effectively with Teachers, Therapy and Pastoral Care (TPC) teams and colleagues regarding student support needs § Assist in maintaining accurate classroom records, displays, resources and learning environments § Follow school policies, routines and professional expectations consistently and effectively Requirements: § Diploma, Certificate or relevant qualification in Education, Teaching Assistance, Child Development or a related field. § Previous experience supporting students in a school or inclusive educational setting preferred. § Experience working with students with diverse learning, behavioural, social and emotional needs. § Basic understanding of differentiated support strategies, inclusive classroom practices and neurodiversity, with awareness of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. § Ability to support learning activities and reinforce teacher instructions in both whole-class and small-group settings. § Ability to build positive and supportive relationships with students while encouraging independence and engagement. § Strong behaviour support and classroom assistance skills within a structured and nurturing environment. § Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, staff and parents where required. § Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment, including supporting Therapy and Pastoral Care(TPC) strategies and interventions. § Commitment to safeguarding, student well-being and pastoral care. § Willingness to support school activities, ECAs, enrichment programmes, camps and holiday programmes where required. § Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and follow routines effectively. § Willingness to learn, take direction and engage in ongoing professional development related to SEN/UDL and inclusive education.
