About this role
This position provides the trainee with hands-on exposure to the planning, coordination, and delivery of dementia-focused care and engagement programmes. The trainee will support structured daily activities designed to enhance cognitive stimulation, emotional well-being, and social interaction for clients. The role includes assisting in facilitating group and individual engagement activities, supporting clients with dementia through appropriate communication and care techniques, and ensuring a safe, supportive, and hygienic environment during programme sessions. The trainee will also gain experience in observing client needs, maintaining basic programme records, and reporting observations to supervisors. This attachment develops practical skills in dementia care support, client engagement, activity facilitation, safety management, hygiene practices, and teamwork within a structured care setting under supervision. Specific Responsibilities 1. Assist in planning and conducting dementia-focused engagement programmes tailored to clients’ cognitive and physical abilities. 2. Facilitate daily group and individual activities that promote cognitive stimulation, social interaction, and emotional well-being. 3. Support clients with dementia during programmes by providing clear instructions, gentle guidance, and reassurance as needed. 4. Observe and respond appropriately to clients’ behaviour, mood changes, or care needs during programme sessions. 5. Ensure client safety at all times by closely supervising activities and following established care protocols. 6. Assist in setting up, organising, and maintaining programme materials and activity spaces before and after sessions. 7. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of programme areas, ensuring infection control practices are properly followed. 8. Support the implementation of structured daily routines to provide familiarity and stability for clients. 9. Record attendance, participation, and observations of client engagement during activities. 10. Report any incidents, concerns, or changes in client condition promptly to supervisors. 11. Assist in basic administrative duties related to programme coordination and documentation. 12. Work collaboratively with care staff and supervisors to ensure smooth programme operations. Technical Skills and Competencies 1. Ability to support and deliver dementia care-focused programmes that promote cognitive stimulation, emotional well-being, and structured daily routines. 2. Ability to engage clients with dementia using appropriate communication techniques such as clear instructions, repetition, reassurance, and patient interaction. 3. Competency in assisting with the planning, preparation, and execution of activity-based programmes tailored to client needs and abilities. 4. Ability to facilitate client engagement activities that encourage participation, social interaction, and a sense of familiarity and comfort. 5. Understanding of basic dementia care principles, including managing behavioural responses with empathy and appropriate redirection techniques. 6. Ability to maintain a safe and supportive environment by adhering to safety protocols and supervising clients during programme activities. 7. Competency in applying hygiene and infection control practices, including cleaning, sanitising, and maintaining a hygienic activity space. 8. Ability to observe and report changes in client behaviour, mood, or physical condition to supervisors in a timely manner. 9. Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) in care delivery, activity facilitation, and workplace safety compliance. 10.
