Job DescriptionThe National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow for the project “A Multi-scale Framework for Assessing Environmental Health Impacts of Anthropogenic Emissions” in the HAITONG (Health Associated Integrated Traverse of Nature and Geoscience) Lab, Centre for Sustainable Medicine (CoSM), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The CoSM is an emerging multidisciplinary hub dedicated to improving patient and population health in the face of climate change and to accelerating the transition to net-zero healthcare. CoSM’s work is organised around three major pathways: preparing future healthcare leaders, accelerating the delivery of net-zero healthcare, and equipping health scientist with the best-available evidence. The Centre is particularly strong in sustainable medicine, climate and health, health-system decarbonisation, carbon analytics, implementation science, digital health, artificial intelligence, and behavioural science, and provides direct analytical and decision-support for health policymakers and health systems responding to climate change across Asia. More information on the Centre is available on the CoSM website. More information on the department is available at https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/cosm. Appointments will be made on a 24-month fixed-term contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. Purpose of the post This position aims to recruit outstanding global talent in sustainability science to address the pressing challenges of climate change and its implications for human health. The appointee will contribute to advancing a multidisciplinary research programme focused on quantifying the multi-scale health impacts of anthropogenic emissions and developing integrated analytical frameworks at the interface of environment, climate, and population health. The research will centre on an integrated “emissions–environment–health” framework, with key objectives including: • Developing high-resolution emission inventories across major human activity systems, including food, energy, and urban environments; • Integrating atmospheric chemical transport modelling with population exposure assessment approaches to characterise the spatiotemporal dynamics of pollutant dispersion and human exposure; • Quantifying the health burden attributable to air pollution arising from anthropogenic emissions; • Evaluating the effectiveness of alternative mitigation pathways, with a focus on health benefits and co-benefits under different policy scenarios. Through these efforts, the position will contribute to the development of novel quantitative methodologies and support the generation of high-impact scientific outputs, strengthening the global leadership of NUS in sustainability and planetary health research. Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator (PI) and study team members to ensure the successful completion of the trial on time. The appointee will be responsible for the following besides undertaking any other responsibilities of a similar scope as assigned by the PI: • Oversee the overall implementation and day-to-day management of the research project, ensuring milestones and deliverables are achieved on schedule. • Lead and contribute to data collection, curation, integration, and harmonisation across multiple sources, and conduct advanced interdisciplinary analyses (e.g., environmental epidemiology, sustainability science, and quantitative modelling). • Prepare high-quality manuscripts for submission to leading international journals and contribute to the dissemination of research findings. • Support the development of competitive grant proposals and contribute to the expansion of related research initiatives. • Provide guidance to PhD students and junior researchers, support their research progress, and assist in organising regular group meetings and academic activities. • Participate in international academic conferences and collaborative activities to stay at the forefront of the field and to enhance the global visibility and impact of NUS research. QualificationsThe applicant should: • Hold a PhD degree in food security, sustainability science, environmental health, environmental epidemiology, or a closely related discipline, with a strong academic track record; • be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to detail; • have knowledge of computation applications; • have experiences in the population health areas of research. Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr Sun Haitong Zhe at ht.sun@nus.edu.sg. Formal application: Please submit your application, indicating current/expected salary, supported by a detailed CV (including personal particulars, academic and employment history, complete list of publications/oral presentations and full contacts of three (3) referees to the NUS Career Portal. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
