SMU Internship Guide: Getting the Most from SMU's Internship Requirements
SMU mandates a 270-hour internship for all undergraduates and runs the InternSG platform to help students secure placements. This guide covers school-specific requirements, the SUSEP overseas programme, and top employers who actively recruit SMU students.
SMU Internship Guide: Getting the Most from SMU's Internship Requirements
Singapore Management University (SMU) is unique among Singapore universities in that it mandates internship experience across all six schools. Understanding the specifics of your school's requirements, the platforms available to you, and how to stand out in a competitive field will define the quality of your internship outcomes.
SMU's Mandatory Internship Policy
Every SMU undergraduate must complete a minimum of 270 hours of approved internship experience to graduate. This translates to roughly 7 weeks full-time or a longer part-time arrangement. Key rules:
- The internship must be in a role relevant to your field of study
- It must be with a registered organisation (sole proprietors require special approval)
- You must submit a Learning Agreement before starting and a Reflective Report after
- Academic credit is available but not mandatory — some students prefer not to take credit to keep their GPA unaffected
SMU InternSG Platform
SMU's dedicated internship platform aggregates postings from SMU employer partners. It operates separately from mainstream job boards and features:
- SMU-exclusive listings not found on JobStreet or LinkedIn
- Employer profiles with SMU alumni hiring contacts
- Internship diary and portfolio tools for tracking your 270 hours
- Application status tracker synced with Career Services
Log in at career.smu.edu.sg using your SMU student account. Postings are refreshed weekly and you can filter by school, duration, and salary.

SMU's 6-Month Internship Policy
SMU allows and actively encourages 6-month internships in Y3. Companies such as DBS, BCG, McKinsey, and Grab run structured 6-month programmes specifically designed for SMU students. These are highly competitive and typically convert to full-time offers at higher rates than shorter stints.
To take a 6-month internship:
- Obtain your dean's approval for course deferral
- File a leave of absence from certain modules (not all — check with your school)
- Register the internship through InternSG before the semester starts
SUSEP — Singapore University Student Exchange Programme (Overseas Internship Variant)
SUSEP's overseas internship track funds SMU students to intern abroad:
- Funding: SGD 3,000–6,000 depending on destination
- Duration: Minimum 8 weeks
- Popular destinations: New York, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, San Francisco
- Competitive — a strong GPA (3.5+) and good standing are expected
Applications open in October for the following year's summer cycle. Submit through Career Services with a supporting letter from the prospective employer.

Tips for SMU Students
- Start before Year 2 — many SMU students do informal internships in Y1 summer to build their resume
- Join SMU clubs strategically — SMU Investment Club, SMU Consulting Club, and SMU Banking & Finance Society all run recruitment prep workshops with industry access
- Leverage SMU alumni aggressively — SMU's alumni network punches above its weight given the school's size; alumni at Goldman, McKinsey, and GovTech often prefer SMU profiles
- For SOA students: time your Big 4 internship to coincide with busy season (Jan–Mar) for the most substantive audit experience
- Log your hours in InternSG in real time — do not leave this to the end as reconstructing hours is difficult
SMU's city campus location next to Singapore's CBD gives students unique proximity to the finance, legal, and consulting industries. Use that geographic advantage.
