SUTD Internship Guide: UROP and Internship Opportunities
SUTD's small cohort and interdisciplinary structure create unique internship opportunities across design, technology, and engineering. This guide covers UROP research opportunities, pillar-specific pathways, and the companies that value SUTD graduates most.
SUTD Internship Guide: UROP and Internship Opportunities
Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is Singapore's newest autonomous university, established in collaboration with MIT. Its small cohort (around 1,000 undergraduates) and interdisciplinary structure create internship dynamics very different from NUS or NTU. SUTD students are known for design thinking, systems-level problem solving, and entrepreneurial orientation — qualities that a growing set of employers specifically seek out.
SUTD's Academic Structure
SUTD organises its curriculum around four pillars:
| Pillar | Focus | Common Internship Sectors |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) | Built environment, urban design | URA, HDB, Surbana Jurong, private architecture firms |
| Engineering Product Development (EPD) | Product design, mechanical, materials | Consumer electronics, aerospace, automotive |
| Engineering Systems and Design (ESD) | Systems engineering, operations research, analytics | Aviation, logistics, finance, GovTech |
| Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD) | CS, AI, cybersecurity, HCI | Tech firms, startups, defence, banking |
There is also the Science and Math (SMAP) curriculum underpinning all pillars.
UROP — Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme
UROP is SUTD's flagship research experience and one of the most distinctive elements of an SUTD education:
- Students work with SUTD faculty on funded research projects
- Projects span AI, robotics, urban mobility, biomedical devices, and more
- Students receive a stipend (typically SGD 500–1,000/month)
- UROP can count toward degree credits
- Strong UROP performance leads to co-authorship on published papers
UROP is particularly valued by:
- PhD programme admissions (MIT, Stanford, NUS)
- R&D divisions at DSO, DSTA, A*STAR, and tech companies
- Deep tech startups where research ability matters
Applications open each semester. Find openings on the SUTD research portal and directly approach faculty whose work interests you. A brief, personalised email to a professor is more effective than a generic application.
SUTD Career Development Centre (CDC)
The CDC manages employer relationships, career programming, and internship credit recognition:
- SUTD Internship Fair: Held twice a year (Sep and Feb)
- Career coaching: Individual sessions available for resume, interview, and offer negotiation
- Employer-in-Residence: Rotating programme where company representatives hold office hours on campus
- SUTD Connect: Alumni mentoring network — small school means unusually high alumni responsiveness
Term Structure and Internship Timing
SUTD operates on a term system rather than semesters:
- Terms 1–5 are foundational (Year 1–2)
- Internships typically happen between Terms 5 and 6 (summer before Y3) and during Term 8 (Y4)
- Some students do a second internship during the Y3 summer break
The compressed, intense curriculum means internship windows are shorter than at other universities. Plan well in advance.
Pillar-Specific Internship Guidance
ISTD (Computer Science / AI / Cybersecurity)
ISTD students are among the most sought-after SUTD interns. Key opportunities:
| Employer | Role Type | Monthly Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| GovTech | Software engineering, cybersecurity | SGD 1,500–2,500 |
| DSO National Laboratories | R&D, systems | SGD 1,800–2,500 |
| Grab / Sea / Shopee | Software engineering | SGD 2,000–3,500 |
| DSTA | Defence technology | SGD 1,500–2,200 |
| Palantir (APAC) | Data engineering | SGD 2,500–4,000 |
ESD (Systems / Analytics / Finance)
ESD graduates have unusually broad appeal — their systems thinking is valued in aviation, finance, and operations:
| Employer | Role Type | Monthly Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore Airlines | Systems, operations research | SGD 1,200–1,800 |
| MAS | Policy, analytics | SGD 1,200–1,800 |
| DBS / UOB | Quantitative analytics | SGD 1,500–2,500 |
| McKinsey / BCG | Analytics & strategy | SGD 3,000–4,500 |
EPD (Product Design / Mechanical)
| Employer | Role Type | Monthly Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Apple (Singapore office) | Hardware, product | SGD 2,000–3,500 |
| HP Inc. | Product development | SGD 1,200–1,800 |
| Continental | Automotive systems | SGD 1,200–1,800 |
| Dyson (Singapore HQ) | Product engineering | SGD 1,500–2,500 |
ASD (Architecture / Urban Design)
| Employer | Role Type | Monthly Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| URA | Planning, design | SGD 1,000–1,500 |
| Surbana Jurong | Urban planning | SGD 1,000–1,600 |
| WOHA Architects | Architectural design | SGD 800–1,200 |
| HDB | Built environment | SGD 1,000–1,500 |
Scholarships That Include Internships
Several Singapore scholarships are tied to SUTD and include structured internship components:
- DSTA Scholarship: Full bond with DSTA; internships at DSTA during Y1/Y2 summers
- ST Engineering Scholarship: Bond with ST Engineering; structured IA during degree
- Smart Nation Scholarship (SNDGG): Internship at government digital agencies
- NCS Scholarship: Bond with NCS; technology internships each summer
If you are considering these scholarships, note that the internship component is compulsory and the employer is predetermined. This trades flexibility for financial security.
Getting Internships Beyond SUTD's Network
SUTD's small size means the school's employer network is narrower than NUS or NTU. Proactive outreach is essential:
- LinkedIn cold outreach: SUTD's interdisciplinary profile is genuinely distinctive — lean into it in your messages
- Startup internships: SUTD's entrepreneurial culture means many alumni run startups; check Glints, LinkedIn, and AngelList
- Hackathons: SUTD hosts and participates in major hackathons; winning or placing opens doors with tech companies
- Design competitions: ASD and EPD students should enter international competitions — shortlisting gets noticed by firms
SUTD graduates consistently punch above their weight in the job market precisely because the cohort is small and the education is differentiated. The internship hunt requires more initiative than at larger universities, but the payoff in terms of role quality is real.
