About this role
Overview We are seeking a Human Factors Engineer to support the design and evaluation of complex operational systems by ensuring that human capabilities, limitations, and user needs are effectively incorporated throughout the system lifecycle. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to improve usability, operational performance, safety, and overall user experience through the application of human factors engineering principles. Key Responsibilities • Apply Human Factors Engineering (HFE) methodologies throughout the system development lifecycle. • Conduct user-centred design activities to ensure systems are intuitive, efficient, and aligned with operational user needs. • Develop and evaluate Human-Machine Interface (HMI) concepts, displays, controls, workflows, and operational procedures. • Plan and perform usability studies, task analyses, cognitive workload assessments, and user evaluations. • Facilitate workshops and interviews with end users and stakeholders to gather operational requirements and user feedback. • Support design reviews by identifying human factors risks and recommending design improvements. • Participate in system verification and validation activities involving operational users, ensuring human factors requirements are met. • Collaborate with systems engineers, software engineers, designers, operators, and project teams to integrate human factors considerations into system design. • Prepare technical documentation, human factors reports, usability assessments, and design recommendations. • Contribute to the development of human factors guidelines, standards, and best practices within projects. Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Cognitive Science, Design, or a related discipline. • Demonstrated experience applying Human Factors Engineering principles to complex operational systems. • Experience with user-centred design methodologies and usability engineering processes. • Experience designing or evaluating Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) for operational or mission-critical environments. • Experience conducting usability analysis, task analysis, or human performance evaluations. • Experience participating in verification and validation activities involving operational users. • Ability to analyse user needs and translate findings into practical design recommendations. • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams. Preferred Qualifications • Experience in defence, transportation, aviation, healthcare, industrial automation, critical infrastructure, or other safety-critical environments. • Familiarity with international human factors and usability standards (e.g., ISO 9241, ISO 6385, IEC 62366 or equivalent). • Experience supporting systems engineering or systems integration projects. • Knowledge of human performance modelling, cognitive engineering, or operational workflow analysis would be advantageous.
