Research Fellow (Atom Probe Tomography for Hydrogen Analysis)

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterization Materials Science, Defense Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials. The recruiting group is led by Professor Eason (Yi-Sheng) Chen, who is a Nanyang Assistant Professor (NAP) and Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellow at NTU MSE. Eason's research group focuses on materials characterization, metallurgy, and hydrogen technologies, particularly using advanced microscopy techniques such as atom probe tomography (APT) and electron microscopes to develop the structure-property-processing relationship of materials. His research pursuits involve the development of advanced workflows to facilitate microscopic observations under extreme conditions, including high or fast load, corrosive, reactive, and/or irradiated environments, and low or high temperatures. The insights gained from these endeavors will contribute to a deeper understanding of material behaviors, paving the way for the development of next-generation high-performance materials. We are looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to facilitate research in using atom probe tomography (APT) to study the distribution of hydrogen in metals and alloys. The role will focus on using a range of experimental approaches to prepare APT specimens, analyze hydrogen signals, and ultimately understand how hydrogen behaves in metals and alloys, facilitating better material design for hydrogen and/or nuclear energy. Key Responsibilities: • Participate in the conduct of research project with research team members to ensure completion of deliverables • Lead and support initiatives for high-quality peer-review journal publications • Develop and improve workflows for preparing high-quality APT specimens via using focused ion beam and other complementary approaches • Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders for achieving project goals • Disseminate research outcomes at conferences and events • Mentor and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students • Assist in preparing high-quality grant proposals • Support teaching activities at NTU • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and collegial environment for work • Support PI’s group operation, facility maintenance, equipment procurement, and liaison with suppliers Job Requirements: • PhD in Materials Science or related fields • Competent in using atom probe tomography (APT) and related tools such as data analyzing software and cryogenic sample transfer suite • Competent in using transmission electron microscopes (TEM) and related techniques such as scanning TEM and correlative imaging protocol • Competent in using scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and related techniques such as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), and electron channeling contrast imaging) • Competent in using focused ion beam (FIB) and lift-out procedure for TEM and APT specimen preparation • Good skills in working independently and communicating as a part of a team • Excellent writing and communication skills for writing and presentation • Good attitude in relevant training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge • Entry level candidates are welcome to apply We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
