About the RoleOur client is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to design and build scalable data infrastructure supporting critical public sector initiatives. This role involves working across large and complex datasets, including geospatial data, to enable data-driven decision-making and digital product development. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with the ability to understand business needs, ensuring data solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with organisational goals. Key Responsibilities• Design, develop, and maintain data platforms and architectures, including data warehouses, data lakes, and operational data stores • Build and optimise data pipelines (batch and real-time) to support large-scale data processing and analytics • Perform data extraction, transformation, and cleansing (ETL/ELT) to ensure high-quality, reliable datasets • Integrate and consolidate data from multiple sources, ensuring scalability, security, and compliance • Develop and maintain backend APIs and data services to support applications and downstream use cases • Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Architects, Analysts, and Engineers to deliver data-driven products • Implement data governance, quality controls, and monitoring frameworks • Operate in an Agile environment, contributing to CI/CD practices, code reviews, and continuous improvement • Participate in onsite engagements where required GIS / Spatial Data Focus• Build and maintain scalable geospatial data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, storage, and validation across multiple sources • Work with GIS platforms and tools such as ArcGIS Server and PostGIS • Utilise Python spatial libraries (e.g. GeoPandas, Shapely) for geospatial data processing • Implement data cataloguing, metadata management, lineage tracking, and security controls for geospatial datasets • Design and optimise geospatial data models, schemas, and storage solutions for performance and scalability • Ensure compliance with geospatial standards (e.g. ISO 19115/19139, OGC) and governance requirements • Provide reliable data services and APIs to support analytics and front-end visualisations • Support development or integration of map services and geospatial visualisation components Requirements• Proven experience in data engineering or data platform development, preferably in large-scale or complex environments • Strong proficiency in data pipeline development, data modelling, and database technologies • Experience working with distributed data processing frameworks and modern data stacks • Solid understanding of data governance, quality, and security practices • Ability to work across both technical and business stakeholders • Comfortable balancing big-picture architecture with hands-on implementation • Strong alignment with public sector mission and impact-driven work Preferred: • Experience with GIS / geospatial data systems and platforms • Familiarity with ArcGIS Server, PostGIS, GeoPandas, Shapely • Exposure to data lakes, cloud platforms, or modern data ecosystems • Experience working on government or public sector projects All information will be kept strictly confidential.
